Our Story
How a lifelong eye for color became a color consultation and residential painting company.
More Than Paint. It’s Personal.
Palatable Painting was built from a lifelong belief that the spaces we live in have the power to change how we feel. This is the story behind why creating homes that feel intentional, harmonious, and personal matters so much to me.
I Didn't Grow Up in a Beautifully Curated Home
I grew up in a hardworking one.
My parents came from migrant worker families and knew poverty, instability, and what it meant to work hard for what you had. My dad was an HVAC technician who could fix almost anything, and my mom worked tirelessly, first at Southwestern Bell and later at AT&T.
They wanted better for us, and they worked hard to give it.
We had what we needed—food, clothing, shelter, and plenty of love. But our home was practical. It sat on piers, with mismatched furniture my dad brought home and rooms that were functional rather than intentionally designed.
There wasn’t a sense of cohesion. There wasn’t intentional color.
And even as a child, I noticed.
I remember visiting classmates’ homes with brick exteriors, coordinated interiors, and rooms that simply felt grounded and put together.
It wasn’t what they had that stayed with me.
It was how their homes felt.
I didn’t have the words for it then, but I was already noticing something that would eventually shape my life and my business:
How a home looks affects how a home feels.
How a home looks affects how a home feels.
He Saw Painting. I Saw Alignment
Some of my earliest hands-on experience came from working alongside my dad. He taught me carpentry, electrical work, auto mechanics—and he put me on paint duty often.
Painting was different.
I could see how something as simple as color and a fresh finish could completely shift a space. It could make something tired feel renewed and something ordinary feel intentional.
That fascination eventually led me to study interior design and earn my bachelor’s degree. I worked in drapery workrooms, lighting showrooms, furniture studios, and paint departments, learning how fabrics, finishes, lighting, proportion, and color work together.
Later, life took me into education and sales. But design never really left me.
Years later, my husband suggested we start a painting business. He has always been my biggest cheerleader, and he often jokes that my interior design degree is “screaming to be used,” especially when it comes to my favorite parts: lighting and paint color.
He saw painting.
I saw alignment.
I saw an opportunity to combine everything I had learned about design, color, and the emotional experience of home with something I had been doing since childhood.
And that became the beginning of Palatable Painting.
From Passion to Purpose
In the beginning, I was still discovering exactly what Palatable Painting was going to become.
Then came one of those projects that changes things.
A friend—one of my biggest champions—trusted me with painting her cabinets. I researched relentlessly, worked through the nerves, and completed the project.
It was beautiful.
But more importantly, it gave me confidence.
Project by project, something became increasingly clear: we weren't simply changing walls, cabinets, and finishes.
We were changing how people experienced their homes.
I began bringing together everything I had learned throughout my life—hands-on painting, interior design, lighting, furniture, finishes, sales, education, and eventually advanced color training.
What started as a painting company was becoming something much more intentional.
Palatable Painting was becoming the bridge between craftsmanship and design.
Color Isn’t Just a Feeling. There’s a Science Behind It.
Here’s something people are sometimes surprised to hear from a color consultant:
Color harmony didn’t simply come naturally to me.
I studied it.
Because having a design degree doesn’t automatically mean you truly understand color.
There’s a science behind undertones. There’s psychology behind how a space makes you feel. There’s physics in the way natural and artificial light can shift a color throughout the day.
I continued studying color and earned specialized certifications so I could understand not only which colors are beautiful—but why certain colors work together in a particular home.
Today, my background as an interior designer and certified color consultant allows me to look beyond a paint chip.
I consider the lighting, flooring, cabinetry, furnishings, fixed finishes, undertones, adjoining spaces—and most importantly, the people who actually live there.
Because choosing a beautiful color isn't enough.
It needs to be beautiful in your home.
And when all those pieces finally work together?
There’s an exhale.
